In so einem Fall kann die Grundversicherung höchstens die Kosten erstatten, die bei gleicher Behandlung im Wohnkanton entstanden wären.

Für alle Kinder unter 18 Jahren gibt es keine Franchise, es sei denn, die Eltern entscheiden sich freiwillig.
Zusätzlich zur Franchise müssen die Versicherten 10 % der Kosten welche die Franchise übersteigt, selber zahlen. Bei teuren Medikamenten beträgt der Selbstbehalt oft 20 %. Dieser Selbstbehalt ist für Erwachsene auf 700 Franken und für Kinder auf 350 Franken pro Jahr begrenzt. Bei einem Spitalaufenthalt müssen Erwachsene eine zusätzliche Selbstbeteiligung von 15 Franken pro Tag bezahlen. Es gibt keinen Selbstbehalt oder Franchise für medizinische Leistungen bei Schwangerschaft und Geburt.
